LGBTQ-Friendly African Safari Options: Travel Weekly
African Travel Inc. has introduced Pride Safaris dedicated to the LGBTQ community, including a new President’s Family Safari in Southern Africa.
African Travel President Sherwin Banda said Pride Safaris is only for the LGBTQ community. During these trips, LGBTQ travelers can rest assured that they will be staying in camps that have been vetted and tested.
“There is still a stigma that Africa is not welcome or open to people from the LGBTQ community,” he said. “There is a belief that Africa is ruled by the religious right and that our cultural norms do not allow a difference and that the destination might not be safe.”
Banda explained that he was a black man, a South African and a Jew. The fact that he’s married to a man doesn’t define who he is. Members of the LGBTQ community want to travel and are looking for the same things – authenticity, a deeper connection to the destination, conservation, etc. – than other travelers. However, for the LGBTQ community, there is an additional security concern.
“All of our camps and travel partners and vendors have been vetted and completed awareness training to serve this particular community,” Banda said. “Second, we also include experiences that would add value in terms of understanding the history of gay people in Africa. So many people don’t know that South Africa has one of the most liberal constitutions in the world and that same-sex marriage is enshrined in the Constitution. ”
Banda himself will run the very first Pride Safari, the Southern Africa President’s Family Safari, next year. This trip will explore the highlights of Southern Africa’s to-do list while exploring the region’s diverse culture, landscapes and wildlife.
Travelers will experience Cape Town’s unique sights – like meeting African penguins and trying their hand at drumming at GOLD Restaurant – as well as its picturesque vineyards. They can spot the Big Five on a game drive or walking safari in the Kapama Private Game Reserve. The safari is balanced with fun activities for explorers of all ages and accommodations suitable for families.
African Travel has also curated safari ideas to meet the different needs of LGBTQ customers. New “Pride GuideWhich includes the President’s Safari offers travel tips that advisors can share with clients.
