BOTSWANA Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation, Lemogang Kwape, has praised Victoria Falls for gaining city status, saying it will boost tourism in the global destination.

President Mnangagwa conferred city status on the local authority in December 2020.

Victoria Falls is the tourism capital of Zimbabwe and the hub of leisure and travel in Southern Africa, particularly in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA).

The city is home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a heritage site across the Zambezi River, with vast wildlife including the Big Five.

Tourists visiting most countries in Southern Africa usually visit Victoria Falls to experience the natural beauty of the destination.

Speaking at the 3rd Session of the Zimbabwe-Botswana Binational Commission (BNC) Ministerial Meeting, Minister Kwape, who co-chairs the 3rd session of the BNC, said city status is a milestone for tourism .

He was pleased with the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation in Victoria Falls.

“I would like to congratulate the Municipality of Victoria Falls on achieving prestigious city status in December 2020.

“The Minister of State’s description was entirely appropriate of Victoria Falls as it is indeed one of the seven natural wonders of the world and heritage sites,” he said.

“I am convinced that this status will strengthen the competitiveness of the city in terms of tourism. When it comes to bungee jumping, myself and the Honorable Ministers accept the challenge,” Minister Kwape said, making delegates laugh.

He was responding to an invitation from his Zimbabwean counterpart and co-chair of the ministerial meeting, Ambassador Frederick Shava, who challenged him and his delegation to sample various tourist activities including bungee jumping.

Speaking at the same occasion, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo said the outstanding geological features, exceptional beauty, spray, mist and rainbow of mighty Victoria Falls make this place an important world destination.

“Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a top tourist destination, popularly known as Mosi-oa-Tunya meaning the roaring smoke and I invite you to tour the falls and participate in the various recreational activities offered by our beautiful city. said Minister Moyo.

He said the decision to hold the 3rd session of the BNC was appropriate as it also promotes tourism in the two countries while strengthening bilateral relations in all fields.

On Wednesday, delegates toured the falls while some ministers left for a sunset cruise.
