Volkswagen Australia will bolster the standard equipment list of its Golf small car range for 2023 model year vehicles, but will keep prices stable.

The changes will come into effect for all MY23 Golfs built from the end of June, while the R-Line, GTI and R variants won’t get the updated equipment until later this year in November.

All Golfs will now be fitted as standard with a front center airbag to protect front passengers in the event of a collision, bringing the total number of airbags in the cabin to nine.

Active safety technologies Lane Assist and Travel assist have also been updated, with Volkswagen explaining the change as follows: “If a driver approaches the outer line of the lane due to a narrow lane, the system will no longer attempt move away from that line and will advise the driver to regain control”.

Other changes to the MY23 Golf range include a new steering wheel airbag cover, new door trim inserts (for base Golf, Life and GTI variants) and updated interior inlays.

Golf GTI grades also mark embossed sports seat covers.

Finally, the Golf’s 10.25-inch all-digital instrument panel will now more easily display the speedometer when there is a pop-up on the screen.

Standard equipment for the Volkswagen Golf range includes 16-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatible wireless multimedia touchscreen, digital radio, three-zone climate controls and cloth interior.

For safety, every Golf comes with the brand’s “IQ Drive” suite, combining autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with detection of pedestrians and cyclists, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control , driver attention alert, blind spot monitoring and a rear view camera. .

Switch to Life adds more customization options for the instrument display, a 10.0-inch multimedia screen, 17-inch alloy wheels, emergency assistance and an exit warning system.

The R-Line, meanwhile, gets 18-inch wheels, a 15mm lower ride height, sports body kit, matrix LED headlights and sportier steering.

Performance-hungry Golf GTI buyers are treated to adaptive suspension, front differential lock, red-painted brake calipers, sports front seats, tartan cloth trim and dual exhaust tips.

The top-of-the-line Golf R, meanwhile, features Nappa leather sport seats and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.

Golf wagons mirror their hatchback counterparts in spec, but obviously offer more cargo capacity thanks to their larger dimensions.

For reference, the Golf hatchback will swallow 381 liters of volume with all seats in place, rising to 1237L with the second row folded down, while the wagon boasts a boot capacity of 611L/1642L.

As before, all Golf variants (apart from the performance-focused GTI and R) are powered by a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine, which sends 110 kW / 250 Nm to the front wheels via a converter-driven automatic transmission eight-speed torque.

The GTI gains in performance thanks to a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine developing 180 kW/370 Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The Golf R, meanwhile, gets all-wheel drive and also uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, but puts out a significant 235kW / 400Nm in hatchback form and 235kW / 420Nm in wagon form thanks with the inclusion of a gasoline particulate filter.

The Golf R’s “R-Performance Torque Vectoring” all-wheel-drive system also enables rear-drive “drift mode” in the hot hatch and wagon.
